Proactive Design Project (PROOMU)

In January 2002 the Finnish Technology Agency (TEKES) initiated a five-year research and development program for supporting the integration of industrial design into the development of new technology. The program (EUR 25 million) was targeted at companies, universities and research centres operating in the area. In 2002, the Center for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research at the University of Helsinki and the University of Art and Design Helsinki started a three-year research project that focuses on studying the transformation of product-development activity in large engineering companies. This phase of the project ended in December 2004.

A new phase in the project started in the beginning of 2005. This includes developmental interventions with three partner organizations: Kone, Metso and Ruukki.

Background

For companies, understanding how new product development practices develop involves a practical interest for better management of organisational changes. In the saturated markets the competition has moved from the level of artefacts to the level of work processes and practices, i.e. designing and delivering products according to the customer’s needs.

The practical problem of creating and managing change within product development practices relates with more theoretical issues of how new practices emerge and disperse in the organisation. Traditionally, research on product development has mainly focused on the processes of developing new artefacts rather than the evolution of the product development practices. During the next three years, our aim is to trace and develop innovative design practices, and to follow the spreading and implementation of these practices in the corporations.

Research Focus

  • Historical transition of the product-development and design activity
  • Emergence of innovative working practices in product development teams
  • Formation and management of a networked design activity
  • Spreading and implementation of new practices across multiple development sites
  • Design strategy and portfolio management
  • Supporting design networks
