Current Activities

I received my PhD at the University of Helsinki in 2011. The PhD dissertation is titled: Unraveling the helix of change: An activity-theoretical study of health care change efforts and their consequences. The dissertation comprises of an introduction, five journal articles published in international journals and edited volumes, and a summary. My research interests are organizational change, change management, evaluation and organizational learning.

I'm currently a project manager at a research project named "Implementation Conditions of Integration Innovations in Health Care: Organizational Volition and the Voice of the Client". The project is funded by Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The project is part of the Innovations in Social and Healthcare Services -TEKES program, which is focused on social and healthcare system innovations. The project leader is Professor Yrjö Engeström. Duration of the project: May 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012.

Professor Yrjö Engeström from University of Helsinki supervised the dissertation together with Docent Hannele Kerosuo. The pre-examiners of the PhD dissertation were professor Paul Adler from Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California and professor Eero Vaara from Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki. In the public defense, the opponent was professor Phillippe Lorino from ESSEC Business school Paris. The dissertation was evaluated as excellent and its grade is Eximia cum laude approbatur.

The four research sites of my dissertation are from the health care sector in Finland. The research sites are a surgical operating unit at a university hospital, an internal disease ward at a university hospital, a clinic of a health center and a health center consortium.

Short Biography

My background is in adult education (M.A. Educ. in 2005). I carried out my doctoral studies (80 credits) in the doctoral programme on Developmental Work Research and Adult Education (DWEAE) at the Center for Activity, Development and Learning at the University of Helsinki.

Previously I worked as a research assistant (2004-2005) and a researcher (2005-2007) at the Center for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research. I took part to a large scale Change Laboratory intervention project as one of the facilitators at a university hospital during the Autumn 2006. I completed Pedagogical studies (60 credits) at the Department of Applied Sciences of Education, University of Helsinki in December 2008.
