Editorial review
This book addresses the question: how does new organizational structure emerge in interpersonal communication during product development? The study focuses on the development of a mobile Internet service called the Mobile Messaging Board at Satama Interactive, an Internet consulting and design company. A unique research method is used to analyze how companies can trigger innovation by initiating "critical transitions" between unconnected sites of conversations, both face-to-face and online. The key findings of the analysis are synthesized in the form of a double cycle model, which illustrates the nonlinear path of new-product and service development in modern organizations.

Blurbs
"The theoretical workmanship of the study is precise and innovative."
Risto Heiskala, Professor of Social Policy, University of Jyväskylä

"Not only does Engeström's study provide an insightful analysis into Satama Interactive's innovation development method but it has helped us further develop that very process. I believe that other organizations will find it valuable as well."
Jan Sasse, CEO, Satama Interactive

The thesis manuscript on which the book is based received the Faculty of Social Sciences Master's Thesis Award in 2002.
