Mwanza, D., Taylor, J., McAndrew, P., Clow, D. & Aczel, J. (2003). Applying Activity Theory to the Design of a Knowledge Network. To appear in the conference proceedings of M-ICTE 2003.
Deployment of computer-based systems in educational sectors is generally focused on supporting teaching and learning. However, the use of these systems in such settings is increasingly being extended to include support for knowledge management processes. Our interests lay in establishing how understanding of the research and organisation of human practices could be used to enhance and leverage the design of incorporated tools to produce effective systems for managing knowledge within this context. This paper describes a re-conceptualisation of our approach to managing knowledge and supporting work practices in a higher education institute using a computer-based system. We outline our approach to understanding how to achieve effective focus when developing such a system through reference to activity theory to help interpret the overall framework for activities in the community.
