The IQ Learn is designed as a support to students, student groups and teachers of a Web course. Still, it is suitable for face-to-face learning also. With the help of the system a student - and also a teacher - can have information about him/herself and about the student group. The IQ Learn consists of self-evaluation tests, a tutoring package and a learning diary.

The tests

The IQ Learn offers the following self-evaluation tests:

     1. Learning motivation: My motivation – what do I expect from my
         studies?
     2. Learning strategies: How can I succeed better?
     3. Learning skills: What ways exist for learning?
     4. My strengths: What are my strengths – what should I develop?

With the help of the tests, a student gets information about him/herself in those areas. A student can also observe his/her development as s/he studies further by filling in the tests again and compare his/her own results to the other members of the group. A teacher can examine the group results and use them as help when planning his/her teaching.

The tutoring package

For a student, the IQ Learn tutoring package Tutoring tools offers guidance and support for controlling learning and learning skills and for developing these skills on the field of each test. For a teacher, it offers guidance for developing teaching skills. The hypertext structured tutoring system involves also exercises and directions. The tutoring package is printable as a pdf-document. Tutoring tools is also published in the "Pedagogiga" series of the Faculty of Education at the University of Helsinki in English.

The aim of the tutoring package is:

to increase the self-knowledge of the student
to increase the self-regulation of the student
to guide the student to reflect and assess his/her learning
     to activate the student
     to support learning
to offer the teachers a general model and tools for tutoring.

The learning diary

The learning diary is most suitable for profiling the development of learning skills of individual student. It is also possible to print the learning diary as a whole or email it for example to the teacher. This way the learning diary reflections can be used in evaluation process. The teacher can also guide the usage of the learning diary by giving assignments and topics for discussions in the course.
