Leicester and its University

The City of Leicester lies in the centre of England and was founded in Roman times.  The city rose to prosperity during the 19th century when its footwear and clothing industries were pre-eminent.  In the 21st century it is a multi-cultural city with a diverse range of high value industries spanning electronics, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, knitwear, clothing and food processing.

The University of Leicester was founded in 1927 and, as well as providing high quality undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education, it has world class research programmes which stretch across the arts, science, medicine, law, education, biological sciences and social sciences.  The discovery of DNA Genetic Fingerprinting and pioneering space exploration are the university's most famous achievements.  The University is a founding partner of the National Space Centre which hosts a range of educational programmes in the fields of astronomy and space research.
